A professor of Accounting at Sheffield University in the United Kingdom, Prof. Khalid Sharif Mahmud has said it is now too late to replace Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta.
Of late, persistent calls are being made for the Minister to resign or be sacked by President Akufo-Addo due to the deteriorated economic situation of the country.
But Prof Khalid believes it is too late for anyone to replace Mr. Ofori-Atta and do any magic to turn things around.
According to the Accounting Expert, Ken Ofori-Atta must be allowed to finish what he started.
“Stop the calls for the Finance Minister to go!!!! The current state of the economy gives no room for anyone even with a magic wand to pull us out… The market is ruthless and unforgiving. Some few months ago a new leadership at the treasury would have heralded some positive response. Now, we have dug deep for a difference in leadership to make any progressive change in the short to medium term as needed.It will be self destructive for anyone to take over from him now, that grace period has elapsed. He should finish what we started…” he wrote.
How Ofori-Atta sees resignation
The Finance Minister himself sees the calls for his resignation as unwarranted after the government sought economic support from International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to him, calls for his resignation were akin to asking a father to resign from his children because he has changed his mind.
He said circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war demanded a change from his original position not to seek IMF support.
